Normunda Brasliņa personālizstāde “Noslēgtā telpa”

Normunds Brasliņš's solo exhibition "Closed Space"

7 February, 00:00 | Ola Foundation

From February 7 to April 30, the solo exhibition “The Enclosed Space” by artist Normunds Brasliņš can be viewed at the Ola Foundation cultural space.

Normunds Brasliņš is one of the most significant masters of contemporary Latvian figurative painting, a professor at the Art Academy of Latvia and head of the Department of Drawing. The exhibition features his works from recent years, centered on the figure and portrait.

The exhibition title “The Enclosed Space” precisely characterizes the artist's creative world - concentrated, subdued and focused on inner dialogue. The female figure appears in Brasliņš's art in countless variations, evoking Renaissance notions of the beauty, proportion and harmony of the human body. Here, form is not illustration, but thought.

The artist says of his exhibition: “I paint people as I imagine them. The mood created by the inner interaction of the figures is important. They are detached from the outside world. I strive to be concise in my expression. It is essential for me to achieve perfection of form, based on an understanding of the body's plasticity. In my oil paintings, transitions between light and shadow and multilayered glazing predominate. In my drawings, I use an original technique I have refined on paper, in which flowing ink is harmonized with a tonally rich, volumetric and linear expression. As a formalist, I do not dissipate myself in narrative variety. The path I have chosen and my artistic explorations are solitary, forming my enclosed space.”

Normunds Brasliņš received his professional education at the Jaņa Rozentāla Riga Art High School and the Painting Department of the Art Academy of Latvia, where he later also earned a master's degree. Since 1980, he has actively participated in exhibitions in Latvia and abroad. His works are held in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art, the collection of the Artists' Union of Latvia, the Villa Haiss Museum in Germany, as well as many private collections in Latvia and around the world.
