CONCERT PATRONS MAESTRO RAIMONDS PAULS AND MĀRIS BRIEŽKALNS
At the evening jazz concert Le Printemps en France, or Spring in France, on April 27 this year, the voice of the charming and captivating French jazz vocalist Caloé will resound at the Ola Foundation cultural space.
Caloé is a French jazz vocalist and composer whom Jazz Magazine describes as one of the most astonishing discoveries of recent times. An admirer of Ella Fitzgerald, she made improvisation part of her character, exploring it with virtuosity and technique - sometimes through jazz standards and sometimes through her original songs with a more modern touch. “An indescribably beautiful vocal technique; all that remains for us is to love Caloé,” the French newspaper Le Canard Enchaîné says of the artist. She studied opera singing at the prestigious Parisian École Normale academy, as well as jazz violin with Pierre Blanchard.
Caloé is a laureate of the International Jazz Artists Competition Riga Jazz Stage, where she astonished the jury, which included Maestro Raimonds Pauls and the competition’s artistic director Māris Briežkalns, with her liberated, assured, and exceptionally talented performance. Caloé has performed at New York’s Tribeca arts center, Mexico City’s Zinco jazz club, Oslo’s Cosmopolite Scene, Nardis jazz club in Istanbul, the Rīgas Ritmi festival, Stockholm’s Fashing jazz club, and on numerous stages and at festivals throughout France.
Caloé’s debut album, Saisons, was released in August 2020. The recording brings together lyrics and music written by the artist herself in both French and English, as well as songs by Brazilian composer Cartola. Poetry, generous harmonies, and catchy melodies: her original compositions reveal popular influences, which the artist revisits through refined rhythms and phrasing.
The concert is in two parts.
Guests are invited to arrive from 18:15 for a welcome glass of wine and a viewing of the current exhibitions.
