For the third year now, the Ola Foundation cultural space has been offering colorful events and unique aesthetic experiences to Latvian art lovers and visitors from other countries. In an interview with L’Officiel Baltic, Ola Foundation founder and board member Ilze Pīlēna talks about how this place with an unprecedented architectural concept was created, explains the criteria for selecting the exhibits and her vision of beauty, and shares her desire to promote a space where people can be closer to art, draw inspiration from new ideas and find peace. Text by Marianna Hodaša.
How and when did the idea for Ola Foundation emerge? What were the sources of inspiration for creating this unique art space?
The idea for our family foundation, Ola Foundation, emerged about five years ago, and it is now entering its third year of operation. My husband and I wanted to create a place where different forms of art and education could coexist and enrich one another, creating a unique cultural experience. We have been inspired by the many art centers, galleries and foundations around the world that we have visited on our travels, especially those that offer not only a place for works of art but also opportunities for other forms of creative expression in music, theater, fashion and more. One such example is the Naoshima art island in Japan, where Tadao Ando’s architecture, art and nature merge in unified harmony, creating a unique experience for visitors.
What is the building’s architectural concept? Are there any special elements?
The building’s architectural and interior concept is based on harmony between the modern and technological and the cozy and romantic. We wanted to create a space that would be architecturally powerful, multifunctional and aesthetic. Seen from a bird’s-eye perspective, the building has the shape of an egg, with spacious, open interiors filled with abundant natural light and nature present indoors, despite being located very close to the center of Riga. A special feature is the retractable roof, which allows our guests to enjoy the full courtyard atmosphere and the sounds of nature.
In your opinion, what influence does art have on the perception of beauty and life as a whole?
"Art has an enormous influence on our perception of beauty and life. It can inspire us, change our view of the world and encourage us to think more deeply about our own experiences and emotions. Art gives us the opportunity to express what cannot be expressed in words, and helps us understand and appreciate beauty in its many different forms."
What aspects of art are especially important to you?
Authenticity and the emotions that art can create are especially important to me. I appreciate works that make us think and offer a new perspective. The social aspect of art is also important to me - how it can bring people together and create dialogue about current issues.
What criteria are used to select exhibitions for Ola Foundation?
We apply several criteria when selecting exhibitions: the quality of the artwork, its ability to create an emotional and intellectual impact, and its alignment with our overall vision and mission. We support both established and emerging artists in order to promote diversity in our exhibitions and concerts. It is always a particular pleasure to support new, rising stars in both music and visual art.
Could you tell us about the Ola Foundation exhibitions and events that you consider the most unforgettable?
All our concerts, exhibitions and seminars are special, close to my heart and dear to me. I am immensely pleased that they are in such high demand, and tickets are most often sold out within a few days. One of the most special recent concerts was by rising global violin star Kristīne Balanas, featuring a double premiere. For the first time in Latvia, all of the great German composer J.S. Bach’s Partitas and Sonatas for solo violin were performed, and for the first time in Latvia, the legendary Stradivarius violin created in 1694 was played. It was truly beautiful and emotional. The concerts by Kristīne Opolais and Maestro Raimonds Pauls were special moments at our foundation. On June 21, we are eagerly looking forward to the wonderful Gidon Kremer.
Speaking of exhibitions, I would especially like to mention the exhibition by textile artist Edīte Pauls-Vīgnere, which evoked strong feelings in visitors; and the exhibition by legendary photographer Uldis Briedis, which presented a deeply emotional and moving story told through portraits of Latvian cultural legends.
Ola’s free seminars for young people with Latvian authorities such as Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Valdis Zatlers, Valdis Birkavs and others have become a tradition. These seminars have not only attracted the attention of a very large number of young people but have also encouraged active discussion of topics important to them.
What upcoming events are planned at Ola Foundation?
At the beginning of autumn, we will open an exhibition of paintings by old master J.J. Valters from a private collection, which promises to be a truly exceptional visual experience. At the beginning of July, our guests will be welcomed by an impressive exhibition of the artist Ieva Maurīte’s latest works. Our autumn concert season will be beautiful, presenting both classical and contemporary music.
We are planning music masterclasses for young, aspiring musicians with the outstanding Balanas sisters. We are also launching a new discussion platform - Ola Conversations, where we will invite Latvian authorities to discuss topics of importance to society.
We very much hope that every one of our guests will find something close to their heart and inspiring.
What is the idea and role of the Residence? How is it connected to the art space? How does the Residence complement Ola’s overall concept and atmosphere?
With its 10 rooms, the Residence complements Ola’s overall concept by creating a cozy and elegant environment that inspires guests and gives them the opportunity to enjoy art, music and culture in all their diversity.
The Residence is available to artists and all our guests; it can be reserved by anyone who wishes to live in an artistic environment, enjoy a creative atmosphere and experience all the advantages of our cultural space. It is especially popular among corporate guests who choose to hold their events with us at Ola.
What unique opportunities does the Ola art space Residence provide for its guests?
While staying at the Residence, guests can fully participate in our diverse range of events, from exhibitions and concerts to masterclasses and discussions. In addition, the Residence is an ideal place for organizing business meetings, offering a creative environment where work and cultural experiences can be combined.
What are the Ola Foundation’s plans for development and expansion in the future?
We will continue the programs we have started, giving them even more life and color. The development of our new countryside residence in Vecpiebalga brings us particular joy. We dream of a sculpture park where works of art will merge with the wonderful nature of Vidzeme, creating a place for inspiration and peace.
If everything goes as planned, at the residence in Vecpiebalga we will restore the Kaudzīte brothers’ school to its historical appearance, but with modern content reflecting the diversity of contemporary culture and art.
We would very much like Ola Foundation to become an oasis where people can find new ideas, inspiration, peace and creativity.
